ELÄKELÄISET

If you ever hear anybody talk about Joensuu outside the Finnish borders, it is most probably Eläkeläiset who's to blame. In the Finnish humppa scene they reign supreme, but even in the Central Europe their fame is something which so many English-singing bands can only dream of, no matter what kind of export efforts they've got backing them up. How is it, indeed, possible to become famous by singing in Finnish and playing out of tune? It is difficult to know exactly, but words such as originality, frankness and madness spring to mind.

Eläkeläiset's latest release came out in February this year, is called Humppasirkus and, again, gives mercy to no one. No animals were harmed, but no humans were pitied when such names as Nightwish, Hellacopters, Madonna and The Hives had to give up their songs to be humppatized.
