ENTOMBED (SWE)

This is the band even Old Nick loves to listen to! They started their career as Nihilist, stirring the basements of death metal with their demo tapes already in the late 1980s. After a couple of years of more nihilism, the band changed their name to the somewhat more original Entombed and recorded their debut album Left Hand Path at the legendary Sunlight studios. Charged with influences from such bands as Repulsion and Autopsy, yet managing to refine the band's objects of idolisation into something completely original, this new Stockholm sound hit the zeitgeist of the first wave of Swedish death metal so precisely that soon it was their turn to be the ones that everyone else followed.

Today, the band's backbone is cadaverous rock'n'roll mixed with shameless but ironical flirting with the lad culture, all played tightly and stone-hard. This is a killer formula for which the band has remained faithful, apart from some slight exceptions, ever since the release of the classic album Wolverine Blues (1993). Entombed is also famous for their unparalleled live performances, so if you're coming to see them at Ilosaarirock, you've got every reason to expect them first grooving like a hotbed of snakes, then smashing you right in the face with a heavy hand.
