Kostajat could as well use the name The All Star Band of the People Who Used to Live in Joensuu But Have Now Moved Elsewhere. Members of this dotty pop band have in their past been playing with such names as Kumikameli, HC Andersen, Mana Mana and Psychoplasma. Kostajat played first together already in the prehistoric eighties, but did not record a single note until the year 2000. Luckily, the second album (Pimeää ainetta, 2002) came out with a slightly tighter schedule.
The band's unique sound consists of the wriggly singing voice of O-E Makkonen, the vocalist, and the flowing lilt delivered by Otra Romppanen, the keyboardist. Makkonen's lyrics reel somewhere between sensible, senseless and incomprehensible. Is this saloon jazz with a rock'n'roll twist? Or maybe action rock with pop flavour? Kostajat is a band that roams somewhere far beyond easy definitions.
