SUBS (CHN)

When you think of China, you don't necessarily first think of rock'n'roll. After all, even the mighty Rolling Stones managed to avoid the country until the beginning of this very year. Beijing, the capital of the country, is nevertheless the capital of the country's rock scene too, and one of the most fantastic new bands from the city is Subs.

Even if Subs' very energetic punk rock — spiced with a healthy load of garage attitude — takes after such Western names as The Hives and Fugazi, there's no question that they've also got loads of personality of their own. The band's frontwoman, the vocalist Kang Mao, throws herself violently into the music like there's no tomorrow. They've got speed, they've got charm, and now they've got visas for Finland too, so give yourself a chance to reconsider your ideas of what Chinese rock'n'roll might sound like and come to see these rare visitors at Ilosaarirock.
