Here is an example of a Finnish band that has, from its very beginning, reached far beyond the humble street corner in Helsinki where its name originates. The Five Corners Quintet was originally founded around the Nuspirit Helsinki collective of DJ's, producers and live musicians. In 2004 FCQ released their first vinyl singles Trading Eights and The Devil Kicks, gaining attention with music magazines all around the world. Since then, the band has toured both Finland and abroad, strengthening its fame in all corners of the world.
Five Corners Quintet's heart and soul are five top-notch Finnish jazz musicians: Jukka Eskola (trumpet), Timo Lassy (saxophone), Mikael Jakobsson (piano), Antti Lötjönen (bass) and Teppo Mäkynen (drums). The band's first album, last year's Chasin' the Jazz Gone By, was nominated as the best jazz album in 2005 by numerous critics, and the track Three Corners was selected as one of the Gilles Peterson's Worldwide All Winners Cuts already in 2004 on BBC Radio One.
