The Ramones and Sex Pistols, media sweethearts of their time, played a vital part in spreading the word punk across the Northern hemisphere, and The Clash established itself in the hearts of the rock historians with its remarkably long career. But there's no reason why The Damned from UK shouldn't be remembered as one of the grand old punk bands, too. Their songs still sound just plain ingenious in their simplicity, and their style is impudent enough to shock even the unnervingly blasé moralists of today. Old skool Britpunk at its best, that is.
It was The Damned who actually released the very first punk rock single in the UK (New Rose in 1976), starting the great DIY tradition that is so popular among the safety pin aficionados even today. And the brothers are still doin' it themselves: The Damned in 2006 AD is powered by original members Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible, not by some snotty young lads grabbed from the nearest temp agency. So come on all you little miss disasters and stretcher case babies, let's pogo!
