Cause for Effect

Which taxonomy should we use in classifying Cause for Effect? It moves on four feet, but the sounds it makes are truly peculiar. So peculiar, indeed, that the band had to invent their own name for the genre they belong to: it's "fusion grind". Others, in want of a better word, have dubbed it "engineer grind", "lounge grind" or even, deliciously enough, "architect core".

Be it core or grind, in any case it's somewhat unexpected that all this musical smart weapon needs is two men, a bass guitar and a drum kit, and a pair of lowly growling vocal chords to boot. Even the distortion effect proves superfluous when you've got the right manner of torturing your bass. The vocalist/bassist Tuomo and the drummer Ari have played together for 16 years now, ever since their school days, and progressed into more and more unique dimensions by the way. Not too many bands are compared – and within the same album review! – with bands and artists as different as Nasum, John Zorn, Amorphis and Miles Davis.

An untrained listener may need a moment in grasping what's really going on when Cause for Effect starts banging on their instruments, but in all its dignified bizarreness this couple is definitely a must-see. That's because regardless all their violent manners, Cause for Effect also contains a fair measure of joviality and good-natured madness. Not to be missed, right?
