Diablo

Diablo

Do you know Juha Mieto? He is a legendary Finnish cross country skier, who back in the seventies and eighties became famous for always losing the gold metals to Swedes by a couple of hundredths of a second, not because he was a poorer sportsman, but mostly because of his insistence on using old-fashioned wooden skis instead of more modern glass-fibre equipment. Diablo's vocalist/guitarist Rainer Nygård has, on several occasions, quoted Juha Mieto as one of his greatest heros – and rather fittingly so, given the stunningly stubborn attitude that both these bearded fellows share in whatever they do. Having ground their relentlessly heavy and onerous metal for years and years now, a distinguishing feature between Mieto and Diablo is, however, beginning to emerge: the latter is actually beginning to get somewhere with their hard work.

With their new album Icaros, due in May, Diablo is more than ever aiming for international stages, where they've still got a veritable mountain to ski up. Now it's a fine time to start exercising your neck and shoulder muscles, because at Diablo's Ilosaarirock performance you're going to need there all the strength you've got.
