Nightwish

Not many Northern Karelian bands – or many Finnish bands, for that matter – have got a career that could be even distantly compared to that of Nightwish. In spite of the band's humble beginnings in a smalltown called Kitee (population 9,610 at the time of writing), during their twelve-year career they have sold more than three million albums worldwide, toured all the five continents and played countless sold-out gigs to crowds consisting of tens of thousands of fans. All these colossal figures fit nicely to the monumentality of Nightwish's music, an ambitious fusion of dramatic opera melodies and heavy, crunchy metal.

Even if Nightwish's achievements must certainly have gone beyond anything the band ever had the courage to hope, the members, and the songwriter-keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen in particular, have let nothing sweep their feet off the ground. Mind you, though, that feet remain tightly on the ground only in matters of business. In his music Holopainen is capable of visualising such fantasy lands that even his hero, Pirate Lord of the Caribbean Sea Jack Sparrow, would undoubtedly be jealous for seeing anything like them.

The most glorious moment of Nightwish's symphony metal has so far been their last year's album Dark Passion Play. Wildly versatile and full of wonderful melodies, it also turned all eyes to the charms of Anette Olzon, Nightwish's new singer. With her colourful personality and gorgeous voice, Olzon has injected a massive dose of new energy to the band's stage show. Energy levels are very likely to reach to the sky among the Ilosaarirock crowd too when they get the chance to welcome Nightwish back to their home ground.
