Pepe Deluxé

Pepe Deluxé

Could Pepe Deluxé be the least famous world class combo ever? One is rather tempted to think so, given that the band's electro songs have been licenced for more commercials than any other Finnish band's tunes, and not just for any commercials, but ones by such modest brands as Levi's and Lee Jeans. Yet they have remained strangely unfamiliar to the public at large both in their home country and abroad. But then again, in many respects the Pepes are not your ordinary kind of shooting stars. Instead of hanging out in hip parties, they'd rather concentrate on making music, and instead of cashing in with a tawdry glamour imago typical for so many one-hit never-beens, for their promo pictures they prefer posing as cyclists, butterfly collectors, or homely spring-time picnic-makers. Though they've played together since the year 1995, so far they have only released three albums (all of them for a tiny Brighton-based indie label Catskills Records) and, before their first Finland tour earlier this year, they had only ever performed twice in their home country.

But who cares about the past? Pepe Deluxé is here now, and its last year's album Spare Time Machine is gripping stuff. An expedition through psychedelic rock seasoned with surf pop, funk, 1960s-style pop, pure prog rock and much more, this critically praised cornucopia of sounds and moods sets the expectations for the Ilosaarirock Festival gig exceptionally high. Only two things are for certain: there will be surprises, and a lot of ecstatic dancing.
