Stella

Stella

Another Joensuu-based band that already a long time ago has graduated to national series, Stella is here to charm the pants off every Ilosaarirock guest. And charm they can, like they charmed the watchers of Finnish Idols into buying the band's first album by oodles once Stella's song, released more than two years previously, was performed in that show. Or like they charmed their audience at Ilosaarirock Festival 2006 with their constant and very visible grinning, as they were performing on the Main Stage for the very first time. These small-town boys and a girl had never thought it possible to gain success of such a grand scale, but in the end it all happened so very effortlessly.

Stella's guitar pop is radio-friendly, but in a good way. Perhaps the most striking element is the singer Marja's powerful voice and even more powerful charisma. She is not a standard girl next door grabbed from somewhere to frontwoman the band in order to prove some ear candy while one's listening to the boys play, but clearly an artist by her own right, possibly even the factor that makes Stella truly stellar.

Last year, Stella seemed to turn everything they touched into some sort of precious metal: both their earlier albums went gold, and so did the tribute album to legendary Finnish rock band Leevi and the Leavings in which Stella contributed. This time Stella climbs to the Ilosaarirock Festival stage with a couple of very unusual gigs under their belts, since in May, they play two nights in Joensuu accompanied by the town's own City Orchestra. Maybe the reason why there are no stars in the Ilosaarirock Festival's July night sky is because they're all onstage, at least when Stella's there.
