Vuokko Hovatta

Besides music, Vuokko Hovatta has also created an impressive career in theatre, so it's no wonder that lyrics are of particular importance to her. To such an extent, actually, that it was near that her first solo album never saw the light of day. Hovatta had already been looking for really touching lyrics for a while, but to no avail – and there was no point in singing something hollow and disposable, she felt.

By accident, Vuokko Hovatta found some poems by Finnish poet Aulikki Oksanen (born in 1944), and that was the small start of a big snowball. When Tuure Kilpeläinen (who has worked previously with Jonna Tervomaa) and Kerkko Koskinen (of Ultra Bra fame) volunteered to make the music for the poems, and Paula Vesala from PMMP, among others, offered some more texts for Hovatta, the need to get the solo album project finally going in earnest grew too irresistible. And so, shortly before the Bissextile Day this year, Vuokko Hovatta's solo debut Lempieläimiä was ready to delight the world with its grand but effortlessly breathing compositions and thought-provoking lyrics.
