Manna

Paris–Helsinki

Mariam "Manna" Jäntti was born in Paris and is absolutely gorgeous. In her music, this singer-songwriter combines raw rock'n'roll expression and delicate feelings, and the end result is delicious and stylishly overpowering. From the very beginning, these fresh-sounding, strong songs have gained attention both home and abroad, and the singles of Manna's second album Songs of Hope and Desire were favourably received even by the notoriously selective British pop media. Not a poor achievement, given that the same sort of recognition has often paved the way to stardom for artists blessed with notably less talent than Manna. Songs of Hope and Desire was produced by Mikko Joensuu from Joensuu 1685 who used his creative support to combine the tradition-conscious 60s-style pop songs with deliberate indie hooks, creating thrilling, unquestionably original soundscapes.

Manna's music has been described as a cross-breed between PJ Harvey and Charlotte Gainsbourg, but the truth is that her songs are more original, and much better. Besides her success abroad, Manna has gained victories on home ground, too: she was selected as one of the Winners of 2009 by the rock magazine Rumba and has adorned a number of music magazine front pages. No can do, she's just that good. Manna's show at Ilosaarirock Festival is definitely a must-see, as chances are that this lady won't stay within these barren borders too long.
