French Films

Those thinking that indie pop grass is greener elsewhere would do a favour to themselves if they took a closer look this side of the fence, and, to be more exact, at a band called French Films. This combo, founded in 2010 and hailing from Southern Finnish satellite towns, had only released one EP when their blogosphere popularity already shot through the ceiling. Thanks to the excellent feedback for that first EP (named Golden Sea), the band had the courage to release a debut album, after which they were off to the clubs in Europe and Japan.

The music is something that hipsters in indie discotheques can shuffle their feet to: it sounds like a hybrid of Interpol and The Drums, with a little bit of The Cure and a hint of New Order mixed in for taste. Post-punk with a fair amount of echo meets sun-scorched surf pop, and the end result is one of the finest new bands in Finland. Add to that a delightful spoonful of positivity to help the hottest sound of the moment go down and live shows that have been praised the world over, and surely, the performance at Ilosaarirock Festival begins to sound like an absolute must-see! Be there, and make your friends jealous later.
