Charles Atlas & Antony: Turning
(Denmark / USA, 2011)
82 min

Finnish premiere

In 2006, Antony and Charles Atlas took their collaborative and critically acclaimed performance tour Turning to major cities in Europe – a sensual and moving exploration of femininity and the basic desire of belonging. The show took shape as a journey through an exotic terrain of innocence, metamorphosis and androgyny by way of an elegantly stylized blend of music, projected imagery, and live performance.

The film in its turn explores the heart of the tour and the live performance, staged around bodies exposed in their fragile and diverse beauty under the limelights. Through its synthesis between Antony's songs, Charles Atlas' strong imagery, and the life stories told by the 13 beauties who perform on stage, 'Turning' creates an intimate and unique expression of themes revolving around identity and humanity themes that are ever present in Antony's artistic universe and unique voice.

The film, a Danish-American co-production, is shown in an almost complete version at CPH:DOX and will no doubt be a highlight of this year's festival. The Guardian called the performance "fragile, life affirming, and truly wonderful" and gave it five stars, while Le Monde in Paris hailed it as a "concert manifest transsexual".
