The xx (UK) and Antony and the Johnsons (USA) to Ilosaarirock Festival

• Antony and the Johnsons with Joensuu City Orchestra
• Ilosaarirock released 34 bands in total
• Ilosaarirock festival area renewed

Ilosaarirock made its traditional Sulo's day release of part of the program for the summer of 2012. In July Laulurinne will host gigs by the Brittish band that brought the music listening world to its knees - The xx. Coming from the United States and performing with Joensuu City Orchestra is Antony and the Johnsons. Led by Antony Hegarty with his unique voice, his band has performed with several orchestras around the world, but this is the first time that this substantial project lands in Finland. On Sulo's day, Ilosaarirock released a total of 34 artists, which is half of the program. The festival announced improvements to the festival area that make it possible to sell more tickets than ever before. Ilosaarirock has been sold out 14 consecutive years. Ilosaarirock takes place at Joensuu Laulurinne on July 13th-15th. Ticket sale begins on April 2nd.

Long-awaited alternative names to Ilosaarirock

In its first program release, Ilosaarirock published all in all nine foreign artists. In addition to the awaited The xx and Antony and the Johnsons, Laulurinne hosts gigs for punk rock great Against Me! (USA), up and coming alternative rock quartet Pulled Apart by Horses (UK), Jamaican reggae star Richie Spice (JAM) and the electro duo from Berlin, Modeselektor (GER). Those of you who prefer your music to be a bit more complicated will surely love the post rock band 65daysofstatic (UK) and all you metal fans can appreciate the Swedish Nasum (SWE) taking the time on their farewell tour to come and play in Ilosaarirock. Goran Bregovic, the superstar of the Eastern Europe, brings with His Wedding and Funeral Orchestra (BIH) a taste of Balkan to Eastern Finland. From the Finnish bands we have (to mention a few) Children of Bodom, Apocalyptica, PMMP, Chisu, Paleface, Pariisin Kevät and GG Caravan. We also released the program for the festival's opening Sulo Club in its entirety. Performing at the club are Michael Monroe, Stam1na, Viikate, Kauko Röyhkä & Narttu and Haloo Helsinki. All in all Ilosaarirock revealed, on Sulo's day, half of the program.

– This year we got the names that we wanted right away. The program isn't nearly ready, but it's already starting to look good. The second album by The xx, released late in the spring is for sure one of the most awaited releases this year and the confirmation for Antony's gig made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. We've been thinking about another orchestra production ever since the Mondo Cane gig a few years ago and Antony was the best possible option for us. Great fresh music is coming here to the back end of Karelia and that's the most important thing here, rejoices the festival's programmer Panu Hattunen.

Festival area renewed

The festival area is undergoing a lot of changes next summer. The vast field behind the Main Stage will be used for the first time. The first stage to move there is the Sue Stage (formerly known as the Third Stage). This new improvement to the festival area makes it possible to sell more tickets than ever before. According to the executive director Markku Pyykkönen, this is not the main reason behind the extension.

– The most important thing is to make the festival as cosy for the audience as possible. Expanding the area we can shorten the queues, have more space for serving alcohol, more grassy areas to hang out and just have more space to move around and be in. When the planning is finished we'll see if we're going to sell more tickets or not. We've gone through all the feedback we've received and try to act accordingly. I hope it suffices, laughs Pyykkönen.
