Opeth (SWE)

Opeth, led by Mikael Åkerfeldt, is one of the biggest names of progressive metal today. That has not always been the band's genre though: they started out in the death metal scene relying heavily on doom influences, and the journey to the current sound with the Hammond organ and even the occasional jazz note has been interesting to say the least. Their sound today can be said to reflect the rock giants such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. Åkerfeldt's compositions are both inventive and multi-faceted, but at the same time classically melodious. The band's rock sound has traded the heaviness for airiness, though the distortion is still there, when you least expect it.

Opeth will release their 11th album, Pale Communion, in August. According to Åkerfeldt, we can expect a traditional heavy metal sound and hard rock riffs along with strings, acoustic guitars, and progressive elements. Sounds like something only this band can do. What a treat it is to have these Swedish prog gods back in Finland!
