Ilosaarirock briefly in English

Ilosaarirock is the second oldest annual rock festival in Finland that keeps going from strength to strenght. Summer 2002 will be the 31st concecutive festival. Rokki, as the event is informally known, has grown to be one of the main events on the Finnish Rock festival calendar. Organising of the event is done mainly by volunteers and enthusiast aiming to develop and create a well oiled machine that offers a wide range of bands and services to the festival going public. Everyone works together towards creating an expirience that rewards all the hard work and that is the driving force for the volunteers who make it happen every year.

Even though most of the organising is done by volunteers, no less than a professional standard is required. The Rokki is still owned and run by Joensuu Pop Musicians and that shows in the end result. Everything possible is done to create a safe and enjoyable enviroment both for the bands and the public and not a money spinner for the organisers. One example of this is that no more than 17000 tickets are sold to make sure that the festival is safe and not over crowded. In the past 5 years the Rokki has sold out, but there is no rest for the wicked and no place for complacency amongst the organisers in creating an interesting line up to pull the crowds and make the festival expirience memorable and satisfying for the public.

Summer 2002 we are aiming to develop once again an exiting and enjoyable expirience for everyone and this year we are especially highlighting how to cope with the undesirable side of the festival, littering, bad behaviour etc, and try to find ways to improve things for all concerned. People can be told off, but in general we trust that the great public thinks ahead and concider their behaviour at the festival site and the surrounding areas.
