Wintersun victorious

Wintersun, Jari Mäenpää‘s grand project, has gradually grown to full-sized band, and what a band at that! The band’s two albums, the self-titled debut and the last year’s “Time”, have been major successes, both in the media and among the everyday metalheads, and now Wintersun has landed here in Ilosaarirock.

Despite the early time slot, a good-sized group of dedicated fans had arrived to listen to the musical fireworks that is a Wintersun gig. Layer upon layer of guitar solos, melodies, harmonies and skillful battering coated with Mäenpää’s versatile vocals filled the one-hour slot easily, and the audience were left yearning more. The band’s music is best left uncategorised, so many different styles merge in their music.

Wintersun songs are, as a rule, longer-than-average little symphonies, so although the band has released only two albums, lot of great songs were left unheard as the unrelenting time marched on and the show was over, too soon by many opinions I would wager.
