As far as popular music is concerned, things tend to move in circles. A certain style of music dominates the airwaves and disappears in to the underground only to return when the time is right. At the turn of the century, rap metal was all the rage and for the last couple of years people have been speculating whether nu-metal is about to make a comeback. The cyclic nature of pop dictates that a comeback is due eventually. “What better place than Oulu, what better time than now.” Enter Apina.
In the end of last year, Apina was signed to the famed record label Sakara Records. As one of only a few flag-bearers of rap metal in Finland, Apina and their lead singer Henri Pesonen combine Marko Annala-esque clean vocals and fierce social criticism reminiscent of the Rage Against The Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha. Ever since the Sakara deal, the eyes of finnish nu-metal fans have been fixed on Apina. The debut album Infektiko will fill a void in the musical landscape of finnish metal.
The single, Kohu, works as a fine introduction to the band. Their early demos caught the attention of the finnish music press including Soundi and Inferno, and now on the strengths of Kohu and Infektiko will deliver the goods and finally update rap metal to the year 2015.
