Saimaa, the brainchild of Matti Mikkola, is arguably one of the most mind blowing phenomena in the Finnish music scene of the recent years. While their debut album Pepe & Saimaa was a supreme compilation of original symphonic pop in the vein of the Beach Boys, the second record Matka mielen ytimeen is definitely the best cover album of the decade. Delving deep into the archives of the 1970s, it draws together groovy latin jazz, solid prog rock and Slavic folk melancholy. The band revamps classic tunes with incredible boldness, bringing out the pure and absolute joy of music. Free your mind, your body will follow!
