The French band Alcest are rightfully regarded as one of the pioneers and major developers of the blackgaze music genre. Their grandiose sound is a combination of raw black metal and ethereal shoegazing, which some have characterised as post-metal. Labelling aside, Alcest boast an impressive CV of five highly-acclaimed studio albums and hundreds of live gigs. The band have also worked with the likes of Sigur Rós and toured with Anathema.
At the beginning of their journey, Alcest was all about primitive black metal, but over the years their style has developed an atmospheric edge that utilises the wall of sound effect in a hugely expressive manner. Alcest’s music is a distinctive mixture of the Great Norwegian Sound à la Ulver and Burzum, and the effect-laden shoegazing mastered by Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine. Their live performances are intense experiences, during which the listeners are swept into a maelstrom of sound and taken to far-away places.
