The intellectual hip hop sensation, Pyhimys, has teamed up with the current grand masters of Finnish prog rock, Saimaa, to create one of the most ambitious musical experiments of 2019. These guys are known for their high-flying creative projects, and once again fans were not disappointed.
Saimaa is a 10-man-strong ensemble of highly accomplished musicians led by the legendary Matti Mikkola. Saimaa’s previous records have gone gold, while they are especially prized for their first-rate live performances.
Pyhimys, who has been baptised as the godfather of Finnish hip hop, has gone from strength to strength over the past couple of years. His album Tapa poika as well as singles Jättiläinen and Kynnet, kynnet have all been king-size hits, while Pyhimys has collected all the music awards and accolades going. After such marathon of success, one could simply bask in their success and sip champagne. Not Pyhimys: in February 2019 came the announcement that Pyhimys and Saimaa have secretly worked on an album and are due to throw a few carefully selected gigs together during the summer.
The Pyhimys & Saimaa collaboration album titled Olisinpa täällä was released in May to widespread critical acclaim, and the songs, such as Hermesetas, are as catchy as it gets. In July, Ilosaarirock festival offers a rare opportunity to see these fine musicians perform together – get there early to guarantee yourself a spot in the audience.
