Swallow the Sun is one of the biggest treasures of the Scandinavian metal scene. Their music is melodic and filled with darkness, doom and depth. The band came close to breaking up in 2016, when the founding member Juha Raivio’s partner, Aleah Starbridge, died of cancer, and Raivio buried himself in unfathomable grief. While at rock bottom, Raivio medicated himself by composing music, and the album born as a result has left both fans and critics awestruck.
The release of Swallow the Sun’s new album in January gave birth to a new era in the band’s history. When a Shadow Is Forced Into the Light is the most impressive and intensive Swallow the Sun album to date. The album shot to the top of the charts in no time, and became an instant doom and death metal classic, assured of its place in Finnish music history. Alas, the Ilosaarirock gig in the summer of 2019 is bound to be epic, and leave you floating in melancholy that is seriously deep, yet hopeful. You have been warned!
