• 11:00 am Green your event II – Sustainable development for events

This seminar is held in English and in Finnish

Sustainable development is a point of view that can be taken into account for all aspects of life. During this century the greener thinking and considering sustainable development has gained firm ground also in the events sector. The environmental impacts of festivals and other events are negative, but at the same time the events adhering to an ideology are often pioneers and trendsetters in the work for sustainable development.

The goal of the seminar is to help event organizers start up practical environmental work and offer examples and processes, drawing examples from some of the biggest festivals in Europe. and explain where to start with the environmental work. The seminar will bring forth the reasons, for which these events are made more friendy for the environment to begin with. The panelists will go through both the processess that they have found good and those that have not yet worked as they would have wanted. By analyzing these examples from the big festivals, the practices, both big and small, can be highlighted that the audience can take away with them to be put to use when organizing their own events. The aim is to inspire events of all sizes to approach producing from a more environmentally friendly point of view.

Tavoitteena on innostaa kaikenkokoisia tapahtumia ajattelemaan tuottamista mys ympristystvllisest nkkulmasta.

Ilosaari Summit – Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Programme

Location: Rock club Kerubi in Joensuu, Finland

The Summit is hosted by Markku Pyykknen / Ilosaarirock Festival.

Schedule

(updated Oct 25th, 2011)

• 11:00am – Mit tapahtuu klubeille? / What is the future of the Finnish rock club?

The panel is in Finnish. Before it begins, some welcoming words by Markku Pyykknen.

Festivaalien tulevaisuudesta ja suurista areenakonserteista on puhuttu julkisuudessa reilusti, mutta todellinen elvn musiikin kivijalka sijaitsee klubeilla. Klubit tuottavat uusia yhtyeit ja ennen kaikkea uusia elvn musiikin harrastajia. Klubeilla ei kuitenkaan mene kovin lujaa. Kallistuneet keikkapalkkiot ja tekniset kulut ajavat elvn musiikin areenat tiukille. Perinteiset rockpyhtt Oulun 45 Specialista Tikkalan Kassan baariin ovat kovan valinnan edess, kannattaako keikkojen jrjestminen nykytilanteessa.

There has been a lot of public talk about the future of the music festivals and arena concerts, but the true cornerstone of live music are the rock clubs. They are instrumental in helping raise new bands and, maybe more importantly, new listeners. However, the clubs havent been doing so good lately. Higher band fees and a demand for more expensive technical equipment threaten to drive clubs out of business. Kassan Baari in Tikkala closed its doors already and Oulus 45 Special has been thinking of not organizing live gigs anymore. Is there future for the rock club as a live venue?

Moderator: Ilpo Sulkala / 45 Special, Oulu

Panelists:
Eeka Mkynen / Nosturi, Helsinki
Hannu Voutilainen / Henry's Pub, Kuopio
Panu Hattunen / Kerubi, Joensuu
Janne Laurila / Telakka, Tampere

• 12:15am – Silmit ja ulkolavat – onko festivaalien tulevaisuus vaarassa? / Changing weather conditions and outdoor stages – are the future festivals in danger?

This panel is held in Finnish

Sonisphere 2010, Pukkelpop 2011, Indianapolis 2011, Ottawa 2011 Ilosaarirock 2012? Maailmalta kantautui viime kesn kammottavia uutisia. Kolmen suuren festivaalin ulkolavat romahtivat tappaen useita ihmisi.
Mik on ulkolavojen tulevaisuus sn ri-ilmiiden kiihtyess? Onko kaikki mahdollinen tehty turvallisuuden eteen? Milloin on syyt evakuoida? Kuka korvaa peruuntumiset? Sonisphere 2010, Pukkelpop 2011, Indianapolis 2011, Ottawa 2011, Ilosaarirock 2012?

Last summer was a black one for the festivals. Three major festivals had stages collapsing, killing several people. Domestic festivals have had similar kind of trouble. In Pori one of Sonispheres stages was destroyed by a downburst and in Helsinki Kanye Wests performance was really close to being canceled due to strong winds. Surprising and merciless weather phenomena have come to stay and the festival organizers have to take into a consideration the threat they pose. What is the future of open air stages as the weather anomalies become more and more frequent? Have all the necessary safety precautions been taken? When to evacuate? Who pays for cancellations?

Moderator: Juha Koivisto / Provinssirock
