In what genre does Fun's eccentric noise belong? That's not easy to say. It is too punk for those who like pop, too complicated for those who like punk and too loutish for those who like art. A total outsider, that is. Then again, Fun is extreme and honest enough to be more punk than a dozen bucketfuls of Doc Martens wearers marinated in cheap liquor, catchy and straight enough to be hot and pop, and versatile enough to be, let's have it, Tough As Hell. An ultimate crossover band, that is!
Fun's music draws from several sources, but it's easy to distinguish influences from the top names of uncompromising 1980's American indie, such as Butthole Surfers, Rapeman, Jesus Lizard and Sonic Youth. Not to mention the band~Rs biggest non-musical inspiration, Henry Charles Bukowski Jr. Fun has also been involved with the little big man of Finnish oddity rock, Pentti Dassum, familiar in many circles from the band Deep Turtle, and now the recorder of Fun's album Szklarska poreba (2004).
On top of all, the band is an unstoppable gig machine. Although Fun's career is only three years long, they have played a hundred gigs all over Europe already. For a band that has no backup from a booking agency and whose material is hardly everyone's cup of tea, that is quite an accomplishment.
