Although this American-based band often finds itself dumped under the heading stoner rock, that slot is only half a truth of their monstrous magnetism. The band's first album Spine of God was released in 1991. The attention they caught with their debut was already intensified by the followers Superjudge (1993) and Dopes to Infinity, but the 1998 album Powertrip was the one to finally turn the tables. It was dubbed a classic of its time, sold gold in the USA, and included the hit single Space Lord.
Last year's Monolithic Baby! took Monster Magnet to yet another level. Their musical soup consists of carefully selected ingredients from the history of rock music, mixed with a unique attitude and sounds. And the final outcome? It may grow hair on your teeth, but it is definitely worth trying, and soon you may find yourself wanting a second helping.
Monster Magnet's live act is famous for leaving nothing to hope for. The singer-guitarist Dave Wyndorf has enough stage presence to fill a venue half the size of the state of New Jersey, so it is unlikely that this most charismatic man in rock'n'roll leaves you untouched in Ilosaarirock either.
