Tarakany (The Cockroaches) was born in Moscow in 1991. It is undeniably the best-known Russian punk band, with more than 500,000 sold records and 800 gigs under their belts. This year's album Rakety iz Rossii (Rockets from Russia) is the band's eleventh, and their songs have been included in punk compilation albums in several countries. Their music is a mixture of old American punk and British '77 stuff, and they have always been a part of both Russian and Western European punk scene alike. In their early days they played gigs against drugs and racism in a movement called Utshites plavat' (Learn to swim). This January they combined efforts with Marky Ramone, playing a 16-date European tour under the name "Ramones Night", with Marky on drums. Tarakany has also supported such names as Misfits, Stranglers and The Exploited.
