CALEXICO (USA)

A porch of a house in the middle of a prairie, a smoky jazz joint in New Orleans, a sweltering marketplace in Tijuana... Coming from the burning hot Tucson, Arizona, Calexico provides you with healthy equipment for inner travelling. At its best, this music is like watching a film with closed eyes. Led by Joey Burns and John Convertino who met when Convertino was still playing drums with Giant Sand, the band is often thought to have hit the gold vein with their 1998 album The Black Light, a delicious mixture of film noir scores, Americana and, basically, everything else between the two.

Heartfelt moods have been Calexico's best asset during its more than ten-year career. On tour, the band consists of six members who can instantly switch from melancholy waltz to a heated mariachi piece, laughing at restrictions and avoiding all genre definitions. The band's leading duo has worked with such names as the legendary Nancy Sinatra or the übercool Gotan Project. Calexico is, in short, at home with the classics, but also has the insight for experiments and modern sound. Last year's Garden Ruin revealed a new, slightly unexpected trait on Calexico: a nose for the political defects of their home country.

In the middle of sweaty Ilosaarirock, a Calexico moment is the perfect opportunity both for calm chill-out and intensive passions. Feel free to pick your choice – just don't miss this event!
