HIDRIA SPACEFOLK
Hidria Spacefolk could very well be dubbed the unofficial sovereign of Finnish instrumental rock. They pay homage to their forefathers Ozric Tentacles and the legendary but sadly deceased Kingston Wall, but in addition to that, the band pours into the kettle some prog rock, space rock and psychedelia, lets it simmer for quite a while, and spices it all up with a handful of influences from electronic music. And the end result? A sudden expansion of the listener's consciousness without any illegal drugs.
For the wider audience, Hidria Spacefolk may be a new acquaintance, but the band has actually been in existence ever since last millennium. Their first self-published record HDRSF-1 (2001), also downloadable in its entirety in the Web, already caused a delighted stir with its refined material, and the first full-length album Symbiosis, released the following year, was praised by prog rock enthusiasts both in Finland and abroad. Balansia (2004) continued the band's journey to new parallel dimensions, and the electronic music connections were drawn to their logical end with the remix album Violently Hippy Remixes where the cream of Finnish electronic artists covered Hidria's songs.
As is the case with so many Finnish acts today, also Hidria Spacefolk's main audience comes from without the Finnish borders. The band has toured several times in Europe and performed in the legendary NEARfest progressive rock festival in the USA. This gig was later released as a splendid live album Live Eleven a.m. (2005). Hidria's latest album Symetria was released in late February. We all wish them a happy space journey and a safe landing at Laulurinne!
