Green advice for festival goers

Climate change and other factors threatening our environment call for attention everywhere: we have to fight them also at rock festivals. Words are one thing but it's deeds that make a difference. True to its nature, Ilosaarirock wants to be as environmentally friendly as possible. We wish that everyone will take part in this work.

Ilosaarirock gathers a large number of people together for a short period of time, and along with all the fun this results in increased environmental strain. But worry not! Each festival goer and festival worker can affect the well-being of their environment with small deeds. At the same time we will all feel better.

Reduce pollution, meet new people

Ridesharing is modern and fun! Get together all Ilosaarirock goers in your area and fill your cars to capacity. Public transport is an excellent invention, too. Besides a cheaper ride you get new festival friends easily and decrease the pollution burden on the environment. Remember also to use the Rokki buses in Joensuu!

Festival food

Wise festival goers pack their bags full of food. Use recyclable packaging rather than disposables. Finnish fruit and local produce are delicious and take away your hunger. The festival area also accommodates a Fair Trade café which sells Fair Trade drinks and snacks.

Bin it

There are plenty of waste containers in the festival area so you can effortlessly bin the waste and leftovers that you produce. This practice helps you and everyone else to enjoy the festival more. Take a supply of degradable packing material in your backpack and put your garbage in them. There are recycling points both in the festival area and the Ravileirintä camping site, for sorting mixed waste, cardboard, glass, and metal.

Smokers! Please put your cigarette butts in a jar or some other container that is easy to empty in one of the big waste containers. Someone has to pick the stumps up anyway.

Water

Rememeber to take care of your fluid balance. There are many water taps in the festival area, offering you local high quality groundwater so you can quench your thirst without excess waste. Use a plastic bottle or some other recyclable container for drinking water, but don't forget that you can't bring any alcohol bottles in to the festival area.

Portable toilets

When you are drinking any liquids, you will also need to relieve yourself before long. There are lots of environmentally friendly portable toilets in the festival area for your convenience. It's better both for the soil and other festival folk that everyone prefers portable toilets to bushes.

After the festival

Please remember to take back home everything that you bring in to the festival area and camping site. Ilosaarirock festival area is a park, and its landscape does not include, say, old sofas and tent shreds. Bring only as much stuff as you can also carry back.
