Beenie Man (JAM)

Anthony Moses Davis, just Beenie Man between you and me and tens of thousands of other fans, belongs to the very elite of dancehall if anyone does. Listing all his co-operation partners and other musical pals would soon lose its meaningfulness, so let's just say that here we have a truly renowned and very hard-working artist, period.

In his home Jamaica, Beenie Man found his way into the limelight from very early on in his life. Young Anthony Davis won a talent show at the rather pristine age of seven. In 1983, Beenie Man was a ten-year-old little rascal with a debut album produced by prominent Jamaican artists under his belt. Underage Davis also gained reputation as a DJ. Even if the awesome kick-off of his career did not keep him in the brightest glare of publicity for very long, he kept working relentlessly.

In 1994, the sweat on Davis's brow earned him a major-label record contract, and by this day Beenie Man has brought out more than twenty releases in his name. At the dawn of the new millennium, he was instrumental in almost making dancehall break big time in popular culture: he went to the studio with Neptunes just when they were at the peak of their creative golden age, and released the hit single Feel it Boy with Janet Jackson that through MTV made him known even here in the Northern boondocks. Since then, the polished style has again been replaced with more elemental dancehall, something which many of his fans don't object to in the least.

This trouper has already seen the four corners of the world and the number of shaking hips must go up to millions, but even so, the Relax Stage beach in the middle of hottest July must be something that even Beenie Man can later look back on with pleasure. Hot party ahoy!
