Dizzee Rascal (UK)

Dylan Mills is a fellow from East London, born 1985, who would probably never even think of coming to Finland in July. In the parallel reality called the world of entertainment he is Dizzee Rascal, a guy who hit the jackpot already in the early Noughties. In 2003, Dizzee Rascal – back then only 18 years of age – rushed to the limelight with his debut Boy in da Corner and was awarded a Mercury Prize for the effort. Now, only six years later, he's got two more albums under his belt and a new one (Tongue "N" Cheek) coming up later this year. Since leaving behind his teenage years, Dizzee Rascal has worked with, shortly, basically anyone who's something, and been acclaimed for it all.

Dizzee Rascal's voice is smoky and slightly nasal, but he shoots rhymes hyperactively with a distinct style that's instantly recognisable even when heard carelessly. The songs are full of eccentric rhythms, embracing anything from hip hop to ragga, and the more you listen the more convinced you are that categories and all those distinctions between genres were not invented with this artist in mind. In the thick of it all, there's also a rather heavy message included, but those not speaking English as their first language may have a bit too hard time if they try to concentrate on the lyrics. So let's just relax and let ourselves be amazed. First time in Finland, Dizzee Rascal!
