Dungen (SWE)
Dungen from Sweden is a bit like Bergman and a bit like Barret. The Swedish down-to-earth attitude is there, but so is British-style psychedelia too. The flowing locks of Robert Plant are there, but so is some of Jimi Hendrix's pectoral hair too. But any associations with tomb raiding here are completely erroneous, and in spite of all that retro touch, Dungen wants to emphasise that they are definitely living in the present. The justifications are powerful: when listening to the band's fervent pop, one certainly wants to be here and now, enjoying the spectacle called Dungen.
So far, Dungen has hatched up five albums' worth of songs that have charmed Europeans and Americans alike. Ta Det Lungt from 2005 was the release that finally established the band's firm position in indie people's hearts, and after that any promising sounds from the other side of the Gulf of Bothnia have been listened to with particular interest.
The sweetest milk of Mother Svea is served in generous helpings at this year's Ilosaarirock Festival. Dungen's vocalist Gustav Ejstes and guitarist Reine Fiske are ready to fascinate the most impatient pop fans already at the Sulo Club on Friday night as members of Anna Järvinen's backing band, having already featured on the lady's albums. These gentle wild strawberries are here for you to indulge in, so come and pick to your heart's desire!
