Maria Lund

Every now and then, Sunday's Main Stage opening act at the Ilosaarirock Festival is something that, in one way or another, is different from the festival's other offerings. The songs interpreted by the singer Maria Lund might be just right for that moment when the festival guests are perhaps feeling a bit under the weather and might need just a little bit of something with a more upbeat approach. After all, loud guitar racket can't be the be-all and end-all all the time, now can it?

Despite its exceptional concept, Maria Lund's album Ajan Sävel has been a success, critically as well as commercially. The album consists of versions of Finnish rock'n'roll classics arranged to sound in an astonishing manner as if they had been written decades ago. The elegance of times past is there while, at the same time, the album sounds fresh and modern. In charge of the arrangements is Valtteri Tynkkynen, a familiar face to Ilosaarirock Festival visitors from the line-up of the band YUP, now joining Maria also on stage as the bass guitarist of her backing band The Aristocrats.
