Melankolics

In spite of their moody name, Melankolics from Joensuu does not just mean bland guitar-picking in minor key. Instead, the music is deeply felt, positively charged power pop/rock, just like the melodies fabricated by the band's dearest British influences when they want to pull your heartstrings in the most bittersweet way. But then again, the sky-scraping sounds do not mean that Melankolics would leave a cold or pompous impression; rather, they sound sympathetic and homely in a good way, like an old friend whose tales are always a delight to hear.

Melankolics has been working on their song material without too much haste. The first two EPs Never Felt Better and Two Songs of Despair were finally this spring followed by the first full-length release Days of Engine and Oil. Slow ripening has only done good to Melankolics' music, as the resulting album is an epic debut that one does not hear every day. Rest assured: their Ilosaarirock Festival performance is going to be a memorable one, and if the sun doesn't happen to shine just then, these melodies are certainly towering enough to pierce the clouds and reveal the big blue sky.
