The Coffinshakers (SWE)

Oh why, oh why are those bands not more numerous that have the guts to rely on their own personal vision of what good music really is? The Coffinshakers from Sweden may not look like a workable solution on paper: how, now, does it sound when you bring together creepy vampire tales, rockabilly and the dark country and western of the Deep South? It actually sounds so great that you just can't miss the band now that, with silver bullets and some garlic, we’ve lured them to play at Ilosaarirock Festival.

The band exploits Gothic moods and B-movie aesthetics shamelessly, creating a completely unique world of their own in the process. All this is topped by the vocalist Rob Coffinshaker's six-and-a-half-foot charisma. His expression has not inaccurately been compared to that of Johnny Cash, given the oozes of worldly wisdom in his voice and his rugged tales. But leave all your gloomy prejudices to the cloakrooms of the Closing Club, because in spite of its dark themes this is really a cheerful kind of music that suits perfectly for dancing too.
