Ilosaarirock Festival’s fashion statement: go for recycling!

This year, Ilosaarirock Festival puts a special emphasis on recycling, and what could be a better way to show loyalty to our principles than find a new purpose for some unwanted stuff gathering dust at the Festival office. Posed with the challenge to turn these yesterday’s favourites into something beautiful and lasting, Riina Hynynen, a soon-to-be Industrial Designer, created a wonderful three-piece collection out of festival accessories left from past few years. Hynynen’s creations will be on sale at the Ilosaarirock Festival only. Each hand-made piece is unique, and there is only a limited number of each design available. So make your way quickly to the stall as soon as the festival gates are opened, because these little beauties will sell like hot cakes! But let Riina herself tell about her work a little bit more:

I am a fourth-year student of Industrial Design at the North Karelia University of Applied Sciences. I’ve been to Ilosaarirock Festival for quite a number of times; you could say that the festival weekend has become an annual tradition to me. Last year, as I was finalising my studies, I needed a theme for my final project, and I decided to ask whether the Joensuu Pop Musicians’ Association would have something suitable for my future profession.

They gave me the task of designing festival merchandise that could be made of recycled materials. I was given loads of old festival bracelets, t-shirts, CDs and bottle caps, and out of these leftovers I started designing various small products. Eventually, three different designs were selected for sale at Ilosaarirock Festival.

Rokkipussukka is a small pouch made of old bracelets, ideal for carrying essential festival items such as earplugs and autograph pens.

The components of Albumi bracelet are cut-outs from CDs. Wearing this bracelet makes arms raised to the sounds from Rento Stage look so much more attractive, and there may even be bits of valuable information included, such as the exact length of Track #8 on Toto’s fifth album.

Korkkikoru is a pendant made out of bottle caps collected from the legendary Kerubi Club in Joensuu. The caps have been bent so that they are safe to wear and then painted with Ilosaarirock Festival themes.

Designing these products was challenging but inspiring, and the items were given their final shape and look little by little as the project proceeded. The bottle caps that make up the Korkkikoru pendants are old bottle caps from Kerubi Club, the Album bracelets are made out of old, worn-out CDs, and the material for Rokkipussukka pouches is old
Ilosaarirock Festival bracelets and t-shirts.

There will be two hundred hand-made specimens of each design, and they will be on sale at the Ilosaarirock Festival.
