Popkatu is a free city festival for the whole family! Organized for the ninth time in a row, the event is held in the beautiful city centre of Joensuu. Its purpose is to offer free culture-oriented experiences to everyone from toddlers to OAP?s.  During this six day event, held every year in July, we offer various activities, concerts, competitions and performances to the public. For example, we have an annual competition called Alanko katutähdeksi?, which is a national,  open-for-all competition for buskers of various talents. For children we offer, alongside various performances, a whole mini-event of their own called LastenPop which provides organized activities and children?s concerts. In addition to these, we offer free gigs, clubs, improvisational theatre and other activities to participate in.

Over the years, Popkatu has grown into a multi-faceted cultural event with thousands of visitors each year. It is beginning to gain both municipal and national recognition as part of a larger entity known as Rokkiviikko. This year, we intend to bring you even more refined and more excellent consistence of different activities and events.

Behind this fantastic event is Popkatu-yhdistys ry, whose sole purpose is to develop the Popkatu event even further alongside with other culturally-oriented organizations and companies. Because we are a non-profit organization and because almost every event is admission-free, our funding consists mainly of different funds and donations from various sponsors. We also have a dedicated staff of volunteers who make this event possible. But the main driving force behind this whole event is the audience who comes and enjoys our festival. If you want to help us to develop our event or want to show your support, you can either become a full member or a supportive member of our organization. You can do this by paying the membership fee of ten euros to 478530-217528
