DISCARD

This year, the honour of opening the Metelli Club goes to Discard, affiliates of edgy, modern-sounding death/trash metal. This young Joensuu-based band has, during its mere two-year existence, made two demo tapes — of which the latter, this year's Bury the Sun, has gained unconstrained praise in Finnish web music portals like Imperiumi.net and Noise.fi.

What makes Discard stand above all the others in the present-day cornucopia of new trash bands is the vocalist Heikki Miettinen, whose singing voice can be anything from ominous rattle to hoarse creaking, and the band's restless, wry general attitude that makes them a great alternative to your average one-idead trash band. Discard hasn't as yet got too many gigs under their belts, but this year's Metelli set is an enviable opportunity to show how they manage to turn their underdog status into their victory and fill the stage to capacity with their healthy self-esteem — not to mention their merciless metal presence.
