KAUKO RÖYHKÄ

One of Kauko Röyhkä's songs is called Olen messias ('I Am the Messiah'). Is he, then, the Saviour? Well, at least he's got a handsome beard — not to mention that he has written eleven books, one of which was lately shortlisted for the most prestigious literature prize in Finland, and he's one of the most widely respected singer-songwriters in the country. The Morrissey of Finland, as someone once said.

And if you still feel uncertain whether you should respect this bearded grinner, don't forget that he's backed by, arguably, the tightest band on this side of Uncle Scrooge. Röyhkä and his band could, if they wanted, just play their hits night after night and soak themselves in a dilute nostalgy solution. Instead, they choose to put their asses on the line and challenge both themselves and their audience.
