It feels futile to put any weight on the fact that Maija Vilkkumaa is a woman rock artist. She is, after all, supremely credible compared to most male artists, both as a performer and as a recording artist. Vilkkumaa started her career in the early nineties in a girl group called Tarharyhmä (the band later proved a veritable hothouse of musical and acting talents), and has during her solo career quickly become one of the most popular artists in the country.
On her albums and at the gigs Maija is backed by a band that consists of crème de la crème of Finnish musicians. Another exciting fact is that a large majority of the festival audience probably has no difficulties in singing along all through her set.
