Once there was the band called Quintessence, then there was the side-project Q-Continuum, and before nobody could expect it, there was The Marienhof, essentially the same band as Q-Continuum but with a large number of visitors from the cream of Finnish music scene. Q-Continuum's first album Organ Kane's Quintessential Grooves, a delicious mixture of funk, soul and jazz, came out in 2004, and even then the recording sessions had proved so fruitful that the album had to be released as a double.
This year saw the release of their second album Q-Continuum Presents The Marienhof. The Marienhof live line-up consists of Q-Continuum (Emma Salokoski, once dubbed the high priestess of Finnish soul, Tuomo Prättälä and Verneri and Ilmari Pohjola) with a variable number of visitors from the Marienhof recording sessions. And even if the albums are great, the live experience works on another level altogether. So if you are not worried by the fact that the music may take you somewhere very different from what you first expected, Q-Continuum is definitely worth checking out.
