Grindcore with an engineer-like precision
Grindcore can also be fun. The fusion-grindcore duo Cause for Effect, bassplayer-vocalist Tuomo and drummer Ari, have been producing their peculiar music for 16 years already. Listeners, both young and new, are always taken by surprise by the ferocious precision attacks produced by a very stripped-down and bare drum set and a clean-toned bass guitar. Judging from the audience’s reactions, it’s impossible to believe how these ambassadors of engineer-core can flawlessly perform dozens of technically very challenging songs.
However, the show isn’t completely void of humour, as Ari the drummer’s facial expressions could be straight from some comedy show. There’s no unnecessary chatter between the songs, and they’re delivered with laser-like precision. Halfway the set Tuomo cheers up the audience by noting: “15 songs done, 15 to go. Drink break.”
Encore is jokingly shouted by chanting “drum and bass”, after all this is drum and bass music. Shouting is rewarded with two more numbers, during which a moshpit forms. The pit lives accordingly to the music, as ten-second precision strikes. This band simply can’t be disliked, even if grindcore, jazz, or traditional heavy-grinding aren’t your thing. One thing is for sure, you’ll always leave Cause for Effect’s gig with a smile on your face.
