Pepe Deluxé’s entertaining animations
Pepe Deluxé kicked off Sunday at the third stage with a thoroughly artistic spectacle. Considering the fact that Pepe Deluxé’s music is rather experimental, it is listener-friendly and easy to approach. This is due to multidimensionality: melodies are mixed with care and go hand in hand with many different art forms.
In addition to music, the group offered true eye candy: the screens bordering the stage showed animation films similar to those of Monty Python or the Beatles classic Yellow Submarine. For example during Salami Fever the union between music and moving image worked extremely well bringing completely new dimensions to the musical experience.
The performance of Pepe Deluxé was confident but convivial, and it delivered the intense rhythm to the audience effectively. Some members of the audience even danced barefoot, which is always an achievement on coarse gravel ground.
Worth to pay attention to was the theremin towards the end of the gig. Miikka Paatelainen conjured up exciting sounds from this strange electronic gadget (played by moving hands near the antennas). Even further amusement was brought about the use of vocoder - the gig featured samples for instance from Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
