Ska of the day as served by The Capital Beat

Julkaistu 18.7.2009 19:07

The Capital Beat played ska with a magnificent brass sectionThe ska and reggae fusion group The Capital Beat started the evening of always so sunny Rentolava stage. The fast rhythms, guaranteed by trumpets, saxophones and slide trombones of  the Southern Finnish eight-man group made the people dance on the sandy beach and on the grass. The atmosphere at Rentolava stage gives every year a jubilant festival mood! (lisää…)

Dizzee Rascal gathered the YleX Stage full of people keen to hear his pacy and rhythmic hip hop music. Right from the beginning, it was clear what was to come. The bass hammered a solid backbone for the rhymes of the East London rapper. The intensive show took the audience, which certainly was enjoying the electrified atmosphere of the gig.

Stam1na - The mystical men from Lemi

Julkaistu 18.7.2009 19:07

stam1na_av-11“We already have Zorro here, but where is Y-Man, his nemesis?”

Here’s quite the pair of mystical gentlemen to watch out for during the gig. Stam1na, those wayward fellows from rural town of Lemi, have finally gotten what they have rightfully earned: a place at the Main stage. (lisää…)

Risto hooked and reeled in the audience

Julkaistu 18.7.2009 19:07

08_risto_jk_-13Risto really knows how to entertain the audience. From the first song on it almost felt like an explosion had filled the dusky YleX stage, and the psychedelic orchestra kept the crowd in their grasp without a fail.

What the audience did, when Tuomo opened his mouth?

It is Saturday in Ilosaarirock. Sun is shining and Tuomo is performing. Hmm, what year is it? Tuomo performs now the second time in row at Ilosaarirock and the weather is almost similar than the previous year. This is, of course, a good thing, because what could be better in order to get the people shake their gluteus maximus than a lovely sunshine? Well, the good dance music, of course!

“Downgrading” Tuomo from Main Stage to Rentolava was a superb idea from the organisers. The keyboard virtuoso and solid anti-showman is doing better in slightly smaller settings and the audience can have their hula hula shaking.

Heavy afternoon in Ilosaarirock

Julkaistu 18.7.2009 17:07

06_stratovarius_jukkaturunen_011Stratovarius opened their first ever gig in Joensuu on full blast, and the crowd enjoyed the show from the get-go in the warm sunshine. The vigorous stage performance radiated energy, and the audience received their due share of that energy. The song list reflected the band’s long history, so the gig was a treat for both long-time and more recent fans.

The summer dress pop of Anna Puu

Julkaistu 18.7.2009 16:07

03_annapuu_tv_031Should one have wanted, it would have been possible to waltz along to Anna Puu - provided the YleX-tent had had any room. In the hot and moist tent the audience cheered for Anna, to which the flower dress wearing star replied with a charming smile. It was rather hard to make sense of his conversations with the audience, as her voice was quiet and appearance rather shy, even though she has been through the harsh critique of Idols judges. (”American Idol” was broadcasted as “Idols” in Finland.)

Rubik solved their puzzle

Julkaistu 18.7.2009 16:07

04_rubik_hh-42Two years can be a long time for a band. The last time Rubik performed in Ilosaarirock, the group left a promising yet a bit immature feeling. Almost as if the quintet wasn’t sure if they should lean more on well-crafted melodies or twisting beats. This time around the group had grown into an octet and conquered the stage with their confidence and sheer power. (lisää…)

Asa - first on-stage

Julkaistu 18.7.2009 15:07

01asajatkajatkat04_am1It is not very common for the festival audience to eagerly rush into the festival area when the gates are opened and the first bands begin to play. Asa with his Jätkäjätkät-collective was to make an exception to this.

A relaxed opening from Hannibal & Joku Roti Mafia

Julkaistu 18.7.2009 14:07

05_hannibal_sj_21Hannibal & Joku Roti Mafia was the first performer of Rentolava, the lake-side reggae-orientated stage. The Rovaniemi-based hip hop artist, formerly known from Tulenkantajat and Hannibal & Soppa, performed with his new band, offering the festival folks some relaxed hip hop music with socially critical lyrics.
