It can be achieved, it seems. Music can be both incredibly intense and ethereal. Gustav Ejsen’s Swedish quartet Dungen filled the Stage Three and the whole tent with gently rolling psychedelia, which seemed to be both timeless and firmly anchored to the past at the same time. (lisää…)

A different punky reggae party

Julkaistu 19.7.2009 21:07

43_bad_brains_jp-2When Sunday was about to turn to evening, the YleX stage was taken by Bad Brains, the experimental punk legends from Washington D.C. The band is not only known as pioneers of the hardcore music, but also for their eagerness to add reggae music to their punk sound. The gig was started by some pure punk songs, but later they started to play reggae rhythms as well. Soon the blendings of the genres became more fluent.

Have a nice life with Nopsajalka

Julkaistu 19.7.2009 19:07

35_nopsajalka_sj-3Nopsajalka & Sound Explosion Band softly rocked the sunny lagoon of Linnunlahti with their finnish ska. The afternoon sun was nice and warm, and some of the audience preferred to nap on the grass, while the some others preferred partying by dancing and waving flags. A juggler also performed on the beach.

The mood was laid-back and easy-going, just like the band’s music, as most of the people on stage and in the audience were smiling.

Death made entertaining

Julkaistu 19.7.2009 19:07

32_eleanoora_al_01Eleanoora Rosenholm’s world is bleak. The group has plumbed the depths of death and murder imagery for a couple of albums now, and even though their output has always been one delivered with a side of crafty smile, the not-so-faint fragrance of death has always clung to their songs. The dark punks of Portland

Julkaistu 19.7.2009 18:07

39_tragedy_jp_031It took six years, but the wait is finally over - Tragedy is back in Finland. The last time I saw this four-piece group from Portland was in a squat in Helsinki, where the masters of the intensive and heavy hardcore roused the audience into a complete frenzy and turned the gig room into a sauna. This time the temperature wasn’t quite as hot, but the level of intensity and aggressiveness was there. (lisää…)

Play it once, for old time’s sake - Maria Lund and The Aristocrats

Julkaistu 19.7.2009 18:07

31_maria_lund_mkh_01-01301Who can imagine a better way to wake up to beautiful Sunday than the singing of a classic songbird. Maria Lund’s delicate, ethereal voice moves something in the deepest recesses of even the most hard-boiled listeners’ hearts, and takes the audience for a trip in the olden-and-golden times. The Haunted vs. the world

Julkaistu 19.7.2009 16:07

the_haunted_av-61The Haunted, currently being hailed as the leading thrashmetal act from Sweden provided the first moshable moments for the metal elite at Ilosaarirock. Marco Aro used to sing in the band the last time they were in Joensuu, but now he’s been replaced by Peter Dolving - the doomsaying verbal machinegun. It took a while for the audience at the second stage to warm up, but after a few warmup rounds, the crowd was in full motion. (lisää…)

An erotic opening for Sunday from Maj Karma

Julkaistu 19.7.2009 16:07

maj_karma_av-121Maj Karma, the opening act on YleX stage on Sunday, gave quite the erotic wake-up call for the good audience of Ilosaarirock that filled the tent about halfway. (lisää…)

A sunny wakeup-call from the general direction of Damn Seagulls

Julkaistu 19.7.2009 16:07

29_damnseagulls_vh_01Damn Seagulls have had the questionable pleasure of being the receiving end of every possible gull-related joke. An antidote to the apathy and exhaustion of the audience was served in form of an excellent horn section and energetic Hammond sound. The irresistible vocals of Lauri Eloranta sparked the audience into a neverending flame of joy. The soulful combination of rock and punk offered by Damn Seagulls once again proved its might, which captured everyone not burdened by too tight genre restrictions.

A story about love - Husky Rescue in Ilosaarirock

Julkaistu 19.7.2009 16:07

24_husky_ha_01-081Woosh! A dimly-lit tent; dusk; hands in the air, soap bubbles and angel dust. Husky Rescue begins, there’s tension in the air. The song builds up, up and up, until the first notes from Hurricane strike through the air. Synergy sweeps through the tent, the gates of love open and the five individuals on stage join in one with the enthusiastic audience. Minimal pop songs follow each other, beautiful notes dance in the air filling the room and escaping through the window. (lisää…)
