PMMP closing the Main stage on Saturday meant quite a party to the large festival crowd, and the people were not disappointed, when Paula and Mira kicked off their set. Whenever Ilosaarirock has guests from beyond the eastern border, they always carry a surprising element in their music. Whether it’s about the unique rhythms of Tequilajazzz, the laid-back latin grooves of Markschneider Kunst or the Karelian ethnic rock of Santtu Karhu, the performances of Russian artists have always had their unique flair which has separated them from the masses. Unlike their countrymen, Everything is Made in China, who hail from Moscow, had decided to challenge the friends of indie music with their own weapons. Instead of slavic echoes or twisted grooves, the group offered a package paying respect to North American alternative groups, where large soundscapes hold a greater degree of importance than the geographic origin of the music. Jyväskylä’s gift to music consists of fat hardcore-crossover punks, also known as Delta Force 2. The boys were deeply disturbed by the fact a nearby skating ramp was demolished from the way of a construction area. (lisää…)

The last performer of the Saturday night at Rentolava stage was the Jamaican dancehall artist Beenie Man. In their sailor-like costume Beenie Man and his band offered an entertaining and colourful show. Energetic show included, for example tribute to the recently died pop legend Michael Jackson. The crowd got a glimpse of a good Caribbean festival mood.

ISIS was one of the most anticipated artists this year in Ilosaarirock, and so the YleX tent was packed with people waiting to see this rare occurrance, some of them perhaps not knowing exactly what to expect. Those who were in the know, were eager to experience the full beauty and mystery that ISIS’ music entails. (lisää…)

Forces of darkness took over the main stage as the dusk began to settle. The most eager fans of Bodom had populated the front of the main stage from the moment the gates of the festival area were opened. The masters of Finnish melodic metal didn’t disappoint their black-wearing fans. The mood was ectatic as the bodomites took over the stage. (lisää…)

A female voice at the head of a brutal metalcore act might have raised a few eyebrows in mild disbelief beforehand, but Walls of Jericho proved this Saturday who wears the pants in this particular genre. (lisää…)

The messenger of Finnish electronic music did what it was expected to. A great amount of fans had gathered in front of the third stage, which became fully packed after the first beats were played. Yours truly had great trouble in trying to fit into the same tent with the energetic and enthusiastic crowd. Yet it was not mandatory for reaching the correct mood, as there was no escape from the pounding bass, no matter how much you tried. Huoratron’s advertised lean and dark sounds were captivating. Don Johnson Big Band is known for their ability to take and hold their audience until the last notes die away and today’s performance surely proves that. The band, headed by Tommy Lindgren, left no one cold, even though the chill of the wind took some of the day’s warmth with it. The whole field full of crowd in front of the Main stage swayed in unison and the atmosphere compensated for the slightly cooler weather. (lisää…)
